At this altitude, you'll need a warm jacket. Hiking boots or boots with a good grip are necessary to avoid falls and accidents.

Then, to discover the fauna of our mountains during the summer season, the Flaine ski area has set up a marauding service at the top of the Grandes Platières. A guide will show you the strategies for adapting and the behaviour that can help protect wildlife. All free of charge with an observation telescope.

Opening period

From 14/12/2024 to 21/04/2025 between 9 am and 4 pm.
The Désert de Platé is accessible on foot or on skis via the Grandes Platières cable car.

From 28/06 to 31/08/2025 between 9 am and 5 pm.
Access on foot from Flaine is possible from May to October, depending on snow conditions.

Location

You can reach the Désert de Platé by hiking the GR 96 (about a 3-hour walk one way). Alternatively, you can take the Grandes Platières cable car directly from Flaine Forum, and climb to the top in just 15 minutes to admire the view of Mont Blanc.
Once up there, the area is isolated and therefore far from any shops or services. Make sure you take the essentials with you.
